Inhalt

In parallel to globalization and an increasing interdependence between countries, we observe a multitude of social and political challenges and problems in international relations (IR) that go beyond the borders of nation states. International cooperation is one strategy to address these issues as it often bears prospects to provide viable solutions for mutual benefit. International institutions play an increasingly important role in this regard as they ‘lock-in’ cooperation efforts. Today, there exists a myriad of international institutions in virtually all policy areas such as e.g. economy, security, infrastructure, environment and health. Since we as societies, peoples and individuals are all affected by international governance institutions, it is not surprising that they have attracted the attention of political science.
In this seminar, we will analyse and explain international institutions from a political science and IR perspective. This includes dealing with questions of why and how international institutions emerge and develop, who has an influence on their institutional design and inherent norms, and whether they operate successfully, i.e. reach their goals and contribute to solving international cooperation problems. We shall also examine whether and how international institutions may influence the governance institutions of their member states at national levels or in third countries.
The seminar provides in-depth knowledge of relevant political science models/theories in combination with empirical case studies. It shall enable students to produce systematic analyses of international institutions, including evaluations of (programme/project) effectiveness.
