Is China a cuddly panda seeking to integrate with the current world order?  Or is it a dragon out to upset the global balance of power?  How does China see its role in the world?  This course attempts to address these questions as it looks at the connection between national identity and Chinese foreign policy.  The first part of the course will dicuss the ideas of China's rise in terms of international relations theory, from both the Chinese and Western perspective.  The second section will analyze the historical legacies that still help to shape Chinese foreign policy today, including strategic culture, hierarchy and the tributary system, the 'century of humiliation' and the Korean War.  The third part of the course will discuss Chinese foreign policy in practice, including the Taiwan Straits issue, territorial conflicts, popular nationalism, China's role in international organizations, the Sino-Japanese conflict, and U.S.-China relations.
