Inhalt

This course will examine transatlantic relations with particular focus on the relationship between the European Union (EU) and the United States (US). Since the end of the Cold War, the potential for conflict between (Western) Europe and the US has increased. From trade to environment, from international criminal justice to security, there has been substantial disagreement on many policy areas in recent years. Many observers have thus talked about severe strains in transatlantic relations, an impression that has been reinforced since the new US administration under Donald Trump has taken office. At the same time economic cooperation and interdependence has continued to rise between the (Western) European and North American economic spaces, and cooperation has intensified in some areas, such as the fight against terrorism. In addition, there is widespread agreement that sustainable cooperation between Europe and the United States is desirable, if not necessary.

After a brief introduction (Section A), we will look at the history of transatlantic relations and also analyse the role played by the US in the European integration process (Section B). In Section C we will study different theoretical approaches for analysing the transatlantic relationship. Part D will focus on different issue areas of EU-US relations (e.g. security, trade, finance, environment). The section on issue areas forms the main part of the course and will stretch over six to seven weeks. Finally, we will consider the future of EU-US relations (Section E).
