Bedingungen zur erfolgreichen Teilnahme: Vorbereitung auf die Sitzungen (incl. kurze Ausarbeitung), Studium der Pflichtlektüre, aktive Mitarbeit sowie regelmäßige Anwesenheit.
Inhalt
The use and application of research methods constitutes an important basis for scientific inquiry. Often students and scholars do not approach qualitative research with a sufficient degree of methodological self-consciousness. This seminar focuses on qualitative research methods in political science in general but also seeks to make them relevant to the sub-field of International Relations. The course allows participants to obtain insights into the various qualitative methods, trains thinking along methodological lines and seeks to bridge the way towards students making use of qualitative research methods themselves.In the introductory phase, the seminar will cover fundamental methodological positions (explaining vs. understanding; positivism vs. post-positivism). Thereafter we will discuss description and causality, the case study approach, case selection, and comparative methods. In the last part of the course important research techniques will be examined, including interviews, participant observation, and discourse analysis.
The language of instruction is English (also all assignments are to be submitted in English).
