What countries constitute East Asia? How do they relate to one another? What are the roles of the international institutions in the region? This course examines these questions as it explores East Asia's impact on world politics. With 2 nuclear states, 2 of the largest economies in the world, as well as several potental hot conflicts, East Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in world politics. The course will first look at the historical development of the region, focusing on the cultural and political influence of China as well as Western and Japanese imperialism. The course will then analyze the impact of the Cold War and later focus on the foreign and economic policies of the major players in the region. Finally, the course will discuss pressing issues in the region, such as North Korea and Taiwan as well as multilateral institutions.Termine
